I spot checked the (significant) mechanical parts of this patch. I'm not entirely convinced that encoding the SYNC in the upper bits was the best choice, but it works.

well, using the upper bit let me still do a reasonable if (model > MEMMODEL_LAST) check to make sure none of the other bits are set..
Its easy enough to change to use the next bit up or something like that.
