At the risk of losing all credibility as a programmer working on a compiler...

...can somebody point me at something that explains what "aliasing" is, how one
violates it, and, perhaps, why it is a bad thing?

[I come from a signal processing background (well, from about two professional
lifetimes ago) and so I think of "aliasing" as "resulting from sampling a
signal with components above the Nyquist frequency."  But one doubts that is at
issue here.]
