LTO bytecode is host dependent and generally "compatibility" is not encoded
very strictly (there's just a major/minor version and that needs to be manually
bumped).

It might work and I'd have expected the simple case you provide to work, so I'm
curious why exactly it didn't.  Maybe sizeof(long)?

But for example LTO bytecode depends on host endianess.
