Actually, it turned out that two Linux distros' nvptx-tools were too old - and
newer 'ld' of nvptx-tool hand weak symbols sufficiently for this too link.
(The update request has been passed on.)

[Early August 2024 seems to be new enough, early June is too old and the latest
of September 2024 unsurprisingly also works fine.]
