pr120226 is the same thing as this pr. There's some brief discussion over
there but I'll close it so that we don't have two PRs for the same bug.
One of the things mentioned there is a slowdown on aarch64 which might be the
same slowdown as on x86_64. So this might not be x86_64-specific. Which is
interesting since pr119919 was x86_64 specific, I believe.
