* I deleted the complete avr toolchain and rebuilt everything. avr-gcc was
built in accordance to https://gcc.gnu.org/install/configure.html.
Result: no change, still the reported error
* I originally used avr-libc-2.1.0. After the change described in
https://github.com/avrdudes/avr-libc/commit/5e6f28bd436e6f9749ecc5bc47f9035f1c1e7423,
the error disappeared.
Updated avr-lib to avr-libc-2.2.1; removed the prototypes as described in the
link above.
Result: Now OK.
