I am grateful for your analysis. It does sound as if it would
be mostly pointless in this specific case, so AFAIK no need to bother.

Over the long term, better structure in GCC source code will help
avoid bit-rot and reduce future maintenance work.

Your patch is too late for my build today. I will test it over the 
next few days. Thanks for your fast work.
