Initially I thought the QEMU q800 VM had run out of memory, but switching to a virt VM with ~3 GB memory and 1 GiB swap also failed. Further checking showed that the virt VM was not actually out of memory (unless I wasn't able to monitor memory changes quickly enough looking at /proc/swaps and /proc/meminfo every minute).
