I avoided trying to compress it per https://gcc.gnu.org/bugs/ "An attached archive (tar, zip, shar, whatever) containing all (or some) of the above." being listed under "What we do not want". And yeah, the steps to repo from a kernel checkout were added mostly for completeness, I didn't expect people to need to use them.
