Since there are many users of GCC who are not native English speakers, it might make sense to avoid such complicated grammar. The GCC users should rather concentrate on fixing their code instead of being distracted by wondering whether the GCC authors know their English. To prevent the i18n translators from writing bug reports like this, it might make sense to add a /* TRANSLATORS: This is correct English grammar. */ above the diagnostic. :)
