Those two patches remove 640MB from both the Garbage and Freed totals in
-fmem-report. At this point I don't think there's anything obvious to do to
reduce memory consumption for this testcase and we can consider the regression
fixed. It might still make sense to leave the bug open at P4 so that I
periodically check that we haven't made things worse.
