A somewhat related issue is why don't we emit a .machine <cpu> directive? We only seems to emit one when we don't specify -mcpu=... and did not configure gcc with --with-cpu=... On LE, the compiler is always built as if a --with-cpu=... option was used, even if the user didn't use it, so we never emit .machine directives on LE.
