You can't see this issue in gnome-terminal because they special-cased this behavior as an intentional deviation from xterm. See https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/vte/commit/916964e . If you follow the links from there you'll get to the grep bug https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?36831 which seems to be the justification for that change. In fact, it looks like this behavior was taken from grep, since the justification block comment is almost identical.
