compiling the first test in comment 0 gives an ICE without
gfc_convert_constant(): Unexpected type for GCC5 to GCC7, with GCC4.9 I get the
error

Error: Can't convert CHARACTER(1) to INTEGER(8) at (1)
All the other tests behave as I expect with 4.9.3.
