Confirmed from 5.5.0 up to trunk (8.0). Compiling the test with 4.9.3 gives an
error:

pr83344.f90:8.24:

  associate(w => trim(s))
                        1
Error: Entity with assumed character length at (1) must be a dummy argument or
a PARAMETER
