Not so fast. I have a build of gcc version 8.0.0 20170921 predating any
changes I made to simple-object-elf.c, that exhibits the same failure with
gold.
I strongly suspect the -fuse-ld=gold failure started with
commit cb194cb7e741bba8741c61cdd63cc4cbe3b0c3f2
