Yes, only Darwin is plagued with this kind of problems. The patch looks plausible, but then the GCC_LINK_FLAGS line must be removed from the Darwin section and the change just be: ifneq ($(strip $(filter-out darwin%,$(host_os))),) endif around the existing GCC_LINK_FLAGS.
