See bug reports fortran/53642 and PR fortran/45170. One could consider backporting the bug fix to 4.7 (and 4.6), even though the bug is no regression (i.e. it never worked). On the other hand, 4.8 fixed several additional issues with allocatable string lengths, hence, you could consider to update to 4.8. (Which is the current developer version, but usually rather stable. See http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/GFortranBinaries) (I removed the "4.7/4.8 regression" from the summary, given that is no regression and that it works with 4.8 since June.)
