So I don't know how I managed to build 4.6.1 once (http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-testresults/2011-08/msg00587.html). I'll just go back and try every one of them with that mod, and run 'make -k check' afterwards. "-gtoggle" seems to do more than just toggling -g - after strip'ing, the objects still differ by an extra text section in one of them. (anybody can have a look at the attached tarballs of object files in this report).
