Thanks - I guess it must be quite specific to that build - I've now tested some other x86_64 machines with the same version of SuSE and they do show the bug, but the other machines I've tried don't: i586-suse-linux gcc-4.2.1 i386-redhat-linux gcc-4.1.2 sparc-sun-solaris2.8 gcc-3.2.2 Robin.
