Yes. I suspect that gfortran accepts any kind type as an extension when a default kind is required by the standard. I suppose at some point someone should audit gfortran. Note, that F2008 has lifted this restriction in all(?) (or most) cases. -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=44797
