On Solaris 8 i386 I tried a bootstrap with GCC 4.4.3 as the working compiler in /usr/local thus :
$ which gcc /usr/local/gcc4/bin/gcc $ gcc --version gcc (Blastwave.org Inc. Sun Apr 4 06:2453 GMT 2010) 4.4.3 Copyright (C) 2010 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
