I cannot answer the question, but I see
gcc/config/rs6000/darwin.h: if (TARGET_64BIT) builtin_define
("__ppc64__"); \
Assuming powerpc-apple-darwin9 is a 32 bit target, __ppc64__ should not be
defined (?).
