The manpage for ld does not say anything about --rpath being a bad way (the default behaviour of GNU ld of only adding RPATH and requireing --enable-new-dtags for RUNPATH is a bit odd IMHO but that's an other issue). Also the gcc manpage doesn't say anything bad about them.
