I still do not feel much the wiser - making vector visible in class motion makes the problem go away. This evidently gives the component 'law_y' of 'motion' a visible type that is no longer ambiguous with the "real" 'vector'. Paul -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=37274
