Could you give this a try on IRIX? It's just an officialized copy of Jakub's suggestion. My only concern is using the "c" flag to ar more than once - it doesn't purge the archive under Linux, but who knows what other OSs will do. -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=33781
