basic_string is delicate, from many different points of view, as we know well, and, at minimum, the current design cannot use the entire the full allocator' max_size. Let's not fiddle with it. I will think about ext/vstring... -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=29134
