In the meantime I have realized that this problem is fixed in version 4.0.0 (gcc/Changelog.11 entry from 2004-04-17). Why was that fix never ported back to version 3.3.5 (released 2004-09-30) or at least to version 3.4.4 (released 2005-05-19)??? -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=26466
