the test programs you provided in #1 and #7 now work correctly for me on i686-pc-linux-gnu. Perhaps it has something to do with my recent fix to PR 24174, I don't know. But if it works for you too I guess this PR can be closed. -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=23419
