Ugh, been looking at the wrong dumps. 
Simple C test case: 
 
void 
test(void) 
{ 
  int i =0; 
  int j = 1; 
  int k = j/i; 
} 
 
gcc -O -fexceptions -fnon-call-exceptions should not optimize away the 
divide iiuc.  But it does.
