To be more precise, on i686-pc-linux-gnu, I created an empty directory, cd'd
into it, and then ran
../gcc-4.0/configure --prefix=$HOME --enable-maintainer-mode
--enable-languages=c,f95
make bootstrap
Same thing for 4.1.
