Just tried gcc-4.0-20050430: the problem is gone. However, I could not reintroduce the problem by just reverting the patch for fstream.cc (still works after I undo the patch), but I think this is not important. Maybe there were other changes as well which prevent the problem from manifesting in gcc-4.0-20050430. Best regards and thanks for the quick solution.
