For a reason, I have not figured out so far, my newly built xgcc did try to pipe the asm sources through the "host-as" instead of the "target-as". So I am now almost convinced that it is not a real bug but a local problem on my machine. I'll be going to try the same thing on another machine tomorrow morning.
