Based on my interpretaion of the procedure call ABI, both this problem and a related Bug #19566 demonstrate a variance from the AMD 64 bit ABI (see "System V Application Binary Interface AMD64 Architecture Processor Supplement", Draft Version 0.95, January 14, 2005, section 3.2.3).
