That is indeed an unrelated bug -- almost certainly due to entirely different things I was doing on the branch -- but unfortunately one which shows up earlier in the build. :-( I will try to assemble a patch corresponding to what I would propose to merge from the branch to mainline, since it wouldn't include such changes. Unfortunately I can't seem to figure out how to grab a snapshot of a branch as of a certain date (CVS sucks, I guess), so I'll have to piece it together by hand. More tagging in future. :-(
