FWIW, I've not had any problems like this, although I tend to use
the MIPSpro cc as the bootstrap compiler, not gcc 3.3.  There have
been other successful build reports too.

If you don't have access to MIPSpro, could you try bootstrapping
with the 3.4.0 binaries available here:
