in fairness this is just capitalism for you.
What is required is something that sells, not necessarily something with is
better, more economical, more user friendly or anything else.
ultimately it comes down to the fact that the vast majority of companies are
there to generate prophit, not necessarily to improve anything else, which
has it's own problems.
This is something Marx pointed out backin the mid nineteenth century but
people stil haven't taken notice.
Btw, while I don't think Marx's solutions to the problems he identified were
up to much, he was a wonderful crytic of the system and showed it's problems
very well.
