Making Hope Possible
-- some thoughts on the Mayors Taskforce for Jobs

----------------------------------------------------------

This paper is based on a keynote speech given by vivian
Hutchinson to thirty-one New Zealand Mayors gathered in
Christchurch 6/7 April 2000 to launch the Mayors Taskforce for
Jobs.

It is now published on the internet at
          http://www.jobsletter.org.nz/vivian/mtfj2000.htm

" Our communities are based on livelihood. Livelihood
underpins our ability to create whole and healthy communities.
This is why ensuring jobs in your communities is a cornerstone
of your leadership and governance roles as Mayors. The most
important legacy you can leave your communities is a greater
resilience of livelihood amidst these rapidly changing times ..."
     -- vivian Hutchinson

The Mayors involved in this Taskforce aim to provide a national
focus of leadership on the jobs issue, and co-operate between
themselves on employment issues in their own communities.

The Taskforce will share "best practice" on what can be
achieved on employment at the local level, create local and
national forums which address the "big picture" of trends on
the issues of income and work, and link with imaginative private
sector initiatives that are addressing unemployment.
