Dear Friends, all,
Firstly: thanks Brad for this opening.
I haven't followed the Clinton's new home story, but I'll believe that it's
more opulent than (virtually) all others.
This is a recipe for disaster.
Richard Wilkinson's book 'Unhealthy Societies' tells us that, the more
unequal a society (any society) becomes, the more unhealthy *all* its
members become.
[ I suspect that this is because, as inequality grows:
 the most disadvantaged become, among other things more angry, violent
(often self-violent) and depressed;
 the more 'advantaged' become more internally guilty, isolated and
fear-full;
And,
 Those in-between (the 'middle classes' ) become more insecure (for
fear of falling from their 'comfortable' positions ? )
[ For the latter group, I do recommend 'Guardian' journalists Larry Elliott
and Dan Atkinson's recent book 'Age of Insecurity' Verso, paperback,
September1999) - particularly the last chapter. ]
What to do ?
1) Analyse how inequality is caused*
2) Act
Love to you all,
j

* I can help with this, but, far better (?) that multiple analyses develop.
