Re Mike Moore aka as "Mad Mike"

A warning from the "right wing laboratory" at the bottom of the South
Pacific

Moore despite his Trade Union and Labour party background was part of the
Rogernomics revolution that brought in the radical structural adjustment
programme in New Zealand. That government from 1984 - 1990 presided over one
of the most radical wealth redistribution processes in the OECD.

The bottom 80% of NZ society was worse off in 1991 than they were in 1981.
The top 20% laughed all the way to the bank.

The extremism of the NZ Experiment has made this country the laughing stock
of the world. Tell me another country that shut down car assembly plants
under a voluntarist trade agreement such as APEC. No other country in APEC
is as silly as New Zealand. The Kiwis appear to think that in the free-trade
agreement, there is a prize for being first lemming off the cliff!!

If you want Moore at the WTO, good-luck.

Hopefully if the WTO takes MOORE then we in NZ will have one less
"right-wing" Labour parliamentarian to deal with.

NZ's extreme trade liberalisation blocks WTO
Tuesday, 4 May 1999, 2:51 pm
Press Release: New Zealand Alliance Party

Mike Moore's bid to lead the WTO is being hampered by New Zealand's
reputation on the world stage as an advocate for unrestricted free trade,
Alliance leader Jim Anderton said in parliament today.

"There is an unprecedented failure to reach consensus over a new director
general. You have to ask yourself, why are Supachai's supporters holding out
so determinedly ?

"The reason is clear: these countries are seriously concerned about the
effects on their own economies of extreme trade liberalisation. Mike Moore's
bid is being handicapped because New Zealand is regarded as the advocate of
policies these countries reject.

"The truth is, most of the rest of the world is suspicious of unrestricted
liberalisation.

"It's ironic that one of Mike Moore's firmest allies at the WTO is the US.
They're happy to encourage Mike Moore's fast-fix liberalisation rhetoric,
while at the same time building the equivalent of the Berlin Wall in trade
restrictions to ban our lamb.

"These countries see the likes of Minister of Trade Lockwood Smith doing a
mercy trip to the US to beg them to remove trade barriers to our lamb, while
New Zealand itself has almost no protections left. The rest of the world can
flood our economy at the cost of jobs in New Zealand, whether we like it or
not.

"New Zealand is constantly negotiating with other countries from a position
of weakness. The rest of the world can see that clearly. They want to keep
some sort of control over their own economies, so they can manage trade in
their own national interest.

"New Zealand is seen as too ideological. Our reputation overseas is
suffering as a result, and this debacle at the WTO just proves that we're
losing influence on the world stage, " said Jim Anderton.

Good Luck
