Having lived through the last quarter of the most violent two
centuries in the history of the world with the current century
being built on "scientific economic theories" (Marx discredited
for the moment while Smith is "in") one might be forgiven for
just a touch of cynicism around such Messianic ideas, especially
since the IMF did such a "good" job in Yugoslavia stimulating
genocide. I wonder, at times, if it is fair to blame Smith,
Carter, George, J.S.Mill or whomever for what people do in
their name after a couple of hundred years. Consider that it
was only 100 years ago that the Dawes Commission Report (made
up of prominent corporate capitalists who had the "best
interests" of the Cherokees at heart) blamed George for the
lack of "selfishness" amongst the Cherokees and broke up the
Cherokee Nation into small individual plots while opening up
the rest of the oil rich land to white capitalist developers,
all in the name of defeating Henry George and "helping" my
Cherokee ancestors! But that is just history. History is
to often what individuals and governments (including corp.)
do to betray what ever book they happen to believe in at
the time. <<
I was enlightened by our exchange and saved all of your posts, and a few
others, from my previous visit to list Future Work.
