Subject: 1%-3% of the world's population online

The authoritative NUA Ltd. Internet consultancy in Dublin estimates that
2.4% of the world's population is now online users.

Yes, you read that correctly -- 2.4% the total human population. Or one out
of every 42 people worldwide.

That is a stunning estimate in a world where so many people are poor and
barely subsistent, yet NUA reinforces it with references to similar surveys
and estimates by Reuters, Intelliquest, MIDAS, and Netree Internet
Statistics, all of whose figures yield a range between 1.8% and 2.8% of the
world's population is online.

NUA cites surveys and estimates by country, which range from 45% of
Iceland's population to 0.001% of The Peoples Republic of China's
population are online. The compilation of surveys and estimates yields a
figure of 115.75 million online users worldwide out of a total population
of 4,823 million humans.

Last month, some on this discussion list scoffed at various agencies' huge
estimated numbers for email traffic worldwide. I thought I'd now point out
even more remarkable statistics. And those among us who won't acknowledge
an avalanche without first utilizing an inclinometer to ascertain which way
is downhill, please note that these statistics are NUA's, not mine, and
that NUA's website contains lists its sources.
