Subject: ILO Report on Asian Financial Crisis
_______________________________________________________________
From the UN "Daily Highlights":
In a new report issued on 16 April 1998, the International
Labour Organization (ILO) has called for policy proposals to
mitigate the disastrous social consequences of the Asian
financial crisis.
According to the ILO report, Asian societies will continue
to suffer in 1998, largely as a result of inadequate policy
responses to the financial crisis in the region. In the
worst afflicted countries, millions will lose their jobs as
a result of retrenchments, especially in the construction,
financial services and manufacturing services.
The absence of meaningful social safety nets will make
matters worse, the report concluded. "This combination of
sharp and unexpected social pain on one hand and lack of
collectively provided relief on the other", the ILO warns,
"is fertile ground for breeding unrest".
The report focuses primarily on Indonesia, Thailand and the
Republic of Korea. It will serve as a background paper for a
high-level meeting in Bangkok on 22 to 24 April of
Governments, trade unions and employers' organizations.
