The IT Industry is Driving the US Economy

Apr 16 1998: A US government report has announced that the extensive growth
of the US economy is, and will continue to be, fuelled by Ecommerce and the
high-tech industry. Conceding the contribution of the Internet to the
demand for new technologies, the government stated that the Internet, by
default, is fuelling the growth of the US economy.

"In the 1990s, information technology (IT) has altered the way businesses
and consumers interact. Domestic and worldwide use of computer hardware and
software products and communications equipment and services is converging
into a single market. This market supports the global information
infrastructure (GII), which is dominated by the Internet", said the report.

The Emerging Digital Economy, a 300 page report on the future of the
Information Technology and it's affects on the economy in the United
States, was released yesterday by the Commerce Department. The report
acknowledges that online commerce is at the epicenter of the future of
economic growth in the US. The report, while commending ecommerce for
contributing to the huge growth in the economy, warns that if the Digital
Economy is not closely monitored and carefully managed, it could get into
difficulty.

At the same time, the report recommends that governments take a laissez
faire approach to the new economy and restrict the implementation of taxes
as much as possible and if they have to impose regulations to do so in as
unbureaucratica fashion as possible. Businesses must be competitive, the
report advises, and be responsible for answering to the public on concerns
such as privacy and abuse.

The report points out that a serious overhaul of the education system is
needed if the US are to fill the number of highly skilled posts that the
economy is and will continue to generate. "If we do not have a sufficient
number of well-educated and trained people to fill these posts, then the
good can turn to bad".

Some bits of information from the report: Information technologies have
been responsible for more than a quarter of economic growth in the last
five years. IT now makes up more than 8 percent of the US economy. Computer
and Communications industries are growing at twice the rate of the US
economy. The lowering of prices in IT products actually lowered inflation
by 1 percent last year. The 7.4 million people working in the industry earn
64 percent more than the average private sector worker. IT workers earn an
average of USD56,000 per year and are the highest wage earners.
