So far we have the question and Alan's data:

<A much more significant figure (than normally reported unemployment) is
the percentage of working age adults who have jobs. This figure is not
generally reported. There is a name for it--"employment population
ratios."
<Here are some 1996 numbers for all sexes:
USA 63.2
Canada 58.6
Australia 59.1
Japan 60.9
France 48.5
Germany 49
Italy 41.9
Netherlands 55.6
Sweden 57.9
UK 57,6

My comment:

If all men worked and all women did uncounted work the the numbers would
all be near 50%.

I submit that whether one has a job that counts in the above list or
not, work of one sort or another is unavoidable. The work may not pay,
the work may not be selfish, the work may be unnoticed, or the work may
yeild a loss. Is walking to the bank work? Maybe not, but there are many
ways to be useful. Will important unpaid jobs get don't if people don't
get unearned income? The most important work is motherhood, and it is
"unpaid."
