Ed Wieck quotes Vladimir I. Markov to the effect that:

    ...fully 60% of the existing private companies [in Russia] are
    in some way or another associated with the criminal world - either
    they are part of this world themselves or they make payments to it
    for their survival.

The Russians have grasped the fundamentals of capitalism and global
finance far better than we've given them credit for. :-)
