Dear Colleague,
I am pleased to inform you that the Second International Forum on
Child-friendly Cities will be held in Turin, Italy from 15 to 17
October 1998. The event is being organized by the Ministry of
Environment, Italy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Italy in
association with UNCHS (Habitat), the Italian Committee of UNICEF and
the Municipality of Turin.
The first Forum on Child-friendly Cities was held in Naples, Italy,
in September 1997. It was attended by some 505 participants and
representatives and stakeholders from 13 cities. The Forum on
Child-friendly Cities is a major follow-up to the United Nations
Conference on Human Settlements in the area of making human
settlements more sensitive to the needs of children and focuses on
sharing experiences, reviewing lessons learned and documenting
on-going initiatives on child-friendly cities.
The meeting will bring together, in an information exchange forum,
the key actors and stakeholders in local authorities who are engaged
in making their city more child-friendly, such as mayors,
representatives of civil society and the beneficiaries. The meeting
will share national and international experiences. In addition, a
guide book on "Sustainable Urban Development for Children" prepared
by the Ministry of Environment will be presented. The following
cities are expected to participate: Bari, Belo Horizonte, Bolzano,
Ferrara, Geneva, Koln, Kompong Thom, Lisbon, Luanda, Milan, Padova,
Palermo, Pistoia, Rennes, Tirana and Turin.
