There was no blue OSD originally, that's Hennes skin, the base skin (for video playback and volume) was all white. Seek/Pause/Toggle OSD (Display) have been modified to use the OSD, as well as anything that tries to display a message (like bookmarks). It is possible that certain keys were being sent directly to xine rather than freevo, I don't use lirc so can't really help on that front.
