All,

As per my other email I've just upgraded to an LCD telly and needed a
VGA cable to run from one end of the room where the media PC lives to
the TV on the other. I wanted this nice and out of sight which meant a
7meter run.

Decent 7meter VGA cables are quite expensive, but I found this on the web:

http://myhometheater.homestead.com/vgacable.html

The thread on AVSForum.com mentioned using shielded cable for better
results, but I had unshielded CAT-6 solid core cable from running
ethernet through my walls lying around so decided to give it a go. I
purchase 2 VGA plugs from Maplin for £1.60 each and soldered pins
1,2,3,6,7,8,13 & 14 as suggested on the web page (which was a REAL pain,
a good tip was to solder the middle pins first, I haven't solder
anything for far too long!).

The cable works brilliantly, even though it is unshielded. There is a
tiny amount of ghosting if you look very closely but certainly not
enough to warrant me spending money on a more expensive cable ;).

Just a quick heads up if anyone else is looking to do this sort of
thing, a cheaper solution and much easier to run a small piece of CAT-6
through the wall / trunking than feeding the head of a pre-made VGA
cable :D.

Hopefully someone will find this useful.

Cheers,

Steve.
