Ah, it sounds like your Imlib2 wasn't built with X11 support. What distro? And yes, you needn't rebuild kaa.imlib2. It doesn't require any of the X11 bits of Imlib2. I agree this is rather awkward. At the very least, kaa.display's setup.py output should make it clearer what's going on.
